Attention is focusing on whether Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, will be reborn as a new home for Taekwondo, the national flag.
The World Taekwondo Federation (WT) selected Chuncheon as the venue for the 2024 World Taekwondo Youth Championships at the temporary executive committee held in Bangkok, Thailand on the 1st.
It is the second time in 20 years since the Suncheon Games in 2004 that this stage where Taekwondo’s new stars compete for skills will be held in Korea. Chuncheon City competed with Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hong Kong in the bid to host 메이저사이트 the tournament.
Chuncheon City’s active move draws attention as it is linked to the WT headquarters bid.
The WT agreed to relocate its headquarters to Daehwa-dong, Seo-gu, Ilsan with Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, which hosted the 2022 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, but virtually returned to the starting point.
WT, which is looking for a new location, received an application for attracting headquarters from Chuncheon City last December. Chuncheon Mayor Yuk Dong-han directly met with WT President Cho Jung-won and asked for support for attracting the headquarters.
The Songam Sports Town area, which was previously considered as a site for Taekwondo Park, is being discussed as a candidate site for the headquarters.
An official from Chuncheon City explained, “The hosting of the World Taekwondo Youth Championships and the WT Headquarters are separate issues,” but “the plan for hosting the WT Headquarters is in place.”
However, Chuncheon is not the only city interested in attracting the WT headquarters. While the city of Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province has already announced its intention to host the project, even Seoul is on the rise. In terms of geographical advantage, the two cities have an advantage over Chuncheon.
WT is expected to make a final decision after receiving specific proposals from local governments that submitted applications for attracting headquarters this month.
A WT official said, “It is true that Chuncheon City is the most active,” and “nothing has been decided yet. Other local governments are also interested, so we are trying to draw conclusions carefully.”
